colorDownload A PDF Brochure

Overview

Ensuring campus-wide compliance with FERPA regulations continues to be a challenge for most colleges and universities. This webcast is intended to clarify how to apply the regulations, how the regulations have changed recently, and questions administrators have on a case-by-case basis.

Join us online as we examine challenging FERPA questions in a variety of scenarios including:

  • The health-or-safety emergency exception
  • Electronic student records and limitations of access
  • Access to education records for research purposes and auditors
  • Sharing records across institutions where a student has been admitted or attended

Who Should Attend

Campus administrators, staff, and other defined "school officials" who have authorized access to student records and who need to understand how the latest regulatory changes might impact their use of protected information.

This includes representatives of the registrar, student affairs, admissions, campus safety, financial aid, bursar, residence life, judicial affairs and legal counsel, health services, advising and counseling services, and information technology.

What Others Are Saying

"A great way to start a dialogue on campus to ensure FERPA compliance and student protection."

"Thank you, I feel I gained insight into the recent changes in FERPA regulations."

"Very informative program, excellent question and answer period"

Program Agenda

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

1:00-2:30 p.m. EDT
  • Reviewing the regulations
    • FERPA basics
    • Addressing common questions across campus, such as;
      • How do I handle potential violent threats against faculty or other students that may call for release of records?
      • Clarifying between FERPA and HIPAA: what regulation "wins" or prevails for record-keeping, when/in which instances, if any, does this change?
      • Can student workers have access to records to perform their duties for instructors? What about peer advisors who are volunteers?
      • What student information does your institution require when students log-in to obtain academic information?
      • Can I share ongoing disciplinary info with the local police department and/or D.A's office?
      • If student gives permission for parental access to student's educational records and leaves the college, is this release also effective until the student provides written instruction to withhold info? What other record access may parents have?
      • How have the new regulations expanded the definition of school officials? How does that impact release of records to vendors, committees, or volunteers?
  • Q & A
