Overview

Help transfer students get off to a strong start with an on-ground or online orientation program designed just for them.

An estimated 60 percent of college graduates will have attended more than one institution in the course of their undergraduate experience. With community college enrollment increasing nationwide, recruiting and retaining transfer students at four-year institutions has become a priority among university administrators. It is vital for administrators to work collaboratively across campus toward creating a transfer-friendly culture to better serve this emerging population at their institutions.

Join us for a webcast that will address the pressing issues surrounding transfer student orientation. Focusing on the experience of two practitioners, this webcast will provide an overview of considerations for customizing your transfer-student orientation program. Included with your registration is a packet of resources that includes sample orientation agendas and schedules.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The audience for this event will include coordinators for transfer student programs, directors and coordinators of transfer student centers, directors of transfer services and articulation, transfer advisors, assistant directors of transfer services, directors of new student programs, and admissions counselors who work with transfer students and hold additional responsibilities outside recruiting. Additionally, at smaller institutions, directors for student affairs, assistant directors for student affairs, directors of new student orientation, and assistant directors of new student orientation all may be involved with transfer student success and retention and would benefit from the content as well.

Instructors

Diane Schmitz, Ed.D.,

Director of Commuter and Transfer Student Life

Seattle University

Diane oversees the three-time national award-winning Collegia Program, which has served as a model for similar programs in the US and Canada. The Collegia Program creates learning communities for commuter and transfer students that provide a sense of belonging and a broader educational experience. Diane has 12 years of experience developing successful orientation programs for transfer, non-traditional, and graduate students as well as in multicultural competency development for students, staff, and faculty and organizational change. She has presented on these topics at regional and national conferences and served as a consultant with other universities. Diane’s doctoral research focused on the experiences of transfer students of color with student affairs professionals.

Charlene Stinard

Director of Transfer and Transition Services

University of Central Florida

With more than 21 years working in higher education, Charlene has served as a faculty member, associate university registrar, and associate director of undergraduate admissions. Now at UCF as director of transfer and transition services, she promotes the academic preparation and transition of more than 10,000 transfer students who enroll each year at UCF, and serves as an advocate for their retention and graduation. Charlene has presented on the subject of transfer students at numerous national and regional conferences, has won national awards for her office’s work with transfer students, and is co-author of “Networks for Transfer Success,” published in the Journal of Applied Research for Community Colleges.
