Overview

Learn effective ways to incorporate online advising into various parts of the student life cycle.

To accommodate students' "high-touch, high-tech" and 24-hour service demands, many schools need to adopt a wider variety of technologies to communicate with students and to make more advising resources available through their websites. Advising students online often begins with minor forays into the virtual environment, such as emailing students in lieu of face-to-face meetings and creating an informational website. These services are usually combined with more traditional forms of advising, such as face-to-face and phone meetings and printed resources in the advising office.

Join us online to learn how to create a more comprehensive and systematized online advising package of options for students.

This event is intended for academic affairs managers (especially advisors and directors of advising and student services) who already engage in aspects of email and/or online advising and are looking to use technology more comprehensively to better communicate with and advise students.

Instructors

Tyann Cherry

Senior Online Academic Advisor

Webster University

As senior online academic advisor at Webster University, Tyann works primarily with graduate students and coordinates workload and communications for a staff of full-time and adjunct advisors. Tyann is also an adjunct faculty member of the School of Communications. An expert in the field of online advising, she is the current chair of the Distance Education Advising Commission and sits on the Webinar Advisory Board for NACADA National Academic Advising Association.

Maria Lanza-Gladney

Academic Advisor

Drexel University

In her current position, Maria researches and implements new strategies to engage and support online students. Before coming to Drexel, she served as a counselor/coordinator at Salem Community College, working within a TRIO program assisting students who placed in developmental courses. She earned her M.S.Ed in higher education administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. Prior to making the transition to higher education, Maria worked for three years in prevention and mentoring programs for children, teens, and parents at a nonprofit agency. She has presented at both regional and national conferences on advising and recently co-wrote an article for NACADA on taking the time to personalize and individualize advising for online students to help them feel more connected with the institution.

Jennifer Varney

Director of Graduate Advising

Southern New Hampshire University

Jen heads up the graduate advising department at Southern New Hampshire University, which uses the proactive advising model. She is also a member of the faculty at SNHU, where she teaches courses in organizational behavior and similar disciplines and is the chair of the Advising Adult Learner Commission for NACADA. She began her advising career working face-to-face with at-risk students. Her passion lies in working with adult students, and this passion fuels her desire to constantly improve her advising practices. Jen has also written on proactive advising for NACADA publications.
