Designing a New Faculty Mentor Program: A Bootcamp for Faculty Leaders

June 8 – July 6, 2023 | 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET
Individual Sessions: June 8, 15, 22, 29, & July 6, 2023

Identify a clear and compelling value proposition for your new faculty mentoring program.

Overview

Now more than ever, academic leaders are focused on responding to declines in faculty morale and career satisfaction. One proven solution for improving the faculty experience and increasing retention is to offer a well-thought-out faculty mentoring program. These programs can improve the quality of research and teaching by breaking down silos and providing faculty with meaningful connections to other colleagues, both inside and outside their department/college. However, it can be difficult to know how to focus your efforts.

Join us online for this 5-week bootcamp, which is designed for academic leaders interested in learning directly from two respected experts who have successfully implemented faculty mentoring programs at both the department/college and institutional levels. Your instructors will share their lessons learned, tips, and advice to help you strategize and draft a custom plan for a new faculty mentoring program—one that targets the greatest needs and opportunities within your college/department. You will also get feedback on your plan from your instructors and peers to help you develop the best possible program for your faculty.

By participating in this bootcamp, you will walk away with these five critical learning objectives:

  • An identified target audience of faculty mentees and mentors
  • A proposed program structure with defined services that you will offer
  • A list of critical short-term considerations to effectively launch, prepare, evaluate, and sustain your new program
  • A thorough analysis and understanding of your program’s value proposition
  • A concrete plan to get you started before you launch or implement your new faculty mentor program

The faculty panel recognizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, and that every institution will approach designing a faculty mentoring program differently based on who owns the mentoring program, its goals, and the audience it is intended to serve. Therefore, these models and practices can be scaled up or down, and special attention will be paid to making sure this content can be easily applied across different institutional settings.

A Highly Personalized Experience

Your registration for this bootcamp includes ongoing consultation during live sessions with our expert faculty, Drs. Rita Kumar and Sana Loue, whose years of providing strategic oversight and direction to faculty mentoring programs have significantly improved the overall success rate and experience of their faculty at their respective institutions. As a consistent hallmark of the Academic Impressions bootcamp experience, the individual attention in this consultation will help you to apply best practices from the bootcamp to your faculty mentoring plan. To preserve the intimate and interactive nature of this training, the bootcamp is limited to 24 participants. Register early to reserve your spot!

What You Will Get

This online bootcamp consists of:

  • Five live online sessions, happening weekly in June – July.
  • Short assignments that you may be asked to complete between meetings to inform your plan and use for discussion in the next session (approximately 1-2 hours per week).

Overview of Faculty Mentoring and 12 Critical Components of an Effective Program

June 8, 2023, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET
After faculty and participant introductions, our expert faculty will define what faculty mentoring is and then introduce 12 critical components of an effective faculty mentoring program grounded in research and best practices. In small groups with similar institution types, or with members of your own team, you will analyze and start discussing these critical components for your own program. By the end of the first session, you will have identified your target mentor and mentee audiences. As the bootcamp progresses, you will continue to develop and add to your custom plan with your specific audience and program learning outcomes in mind.

Designing the Program Infrastructure

June 15, 2023, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET
We will begin this session by reviewing your identified target audience, documenting their needs, and connecting those needs to the strategic goals of your institution. We will then explore the following elements as they pertain to meeting your audience’s needs:

  • Program design considerations
  • Potential structures and mentoring models
  • Methods for applying learning from the program into everyday practice
  • Services that your program will offer
  • Collaborators you’ll need to work with

Program Implementation Considerations

June 22, 2023, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET
Now that we have explored the intended audience and specific needs for building your program’s infrastructure, we will begin to take a look at the necessary considerations for implementing your new faculty mentoring program. Our expert faculty will share their insights and ideas as they walk you through such vital questions as:

  • Where will you find financial and staffing resources to not only launch your program but also sustain it?
  • What timeline milestones are you aiming for, and why?
  • How will you recruit and train mentees and mentors while monitoring the successes of these relationships?
  • How can you encourage inclusive mentoring best practices?

Marketing & Assessing Your Mentoring Program and Value Proposition Discussion

June 29, 2023, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET
Knowing how to market and assess your formal mentoring program is critical to the success of the program and will help you identify and communicate the program’s ROI. Your faculty panel will share their proven metrics for how they evaluate their own programs. Then, in small groups, we will begin to review draft copies of your value proposition and share strategies for how to communicate that value proposition to critical stakeholders to promote buy-in of your proposed plan.

Custom Plan Small-Group Presentations & Final Recommendations

July 6, 2023, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET
In this final session, we will divide participants into two larger groups with each faculty instructor designee and give you an opportunity to either share your value proposition for feedback or practice making a case for your new proposed faculty mentoring program. You will have the opportunity to share and address any concerns or gaps in your plan and receive recommendations and feedback from others, while also providing your own ideas and resources to members of your cohort.
