Rethinking NCAA Division 1 Athletics Operations for a More Sustainable Future

Rethinking NCAA Division 1 Athletics Operations for a More Sustainable Future

July 30, 2020 | 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time

Join your peers to rethink and discuss several aspects of Division 1 athletics operations so you can emerge from our current crisis better equipped and in a stronger position.

Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter the landscape of college sports. While the resumption of many collegiate athletic activities on June 1 might signal more normal operations, perhaps a return to “business as usual” should not be the goal. How might our current crisis transform into an opportunity to rethink certain aspects of NCAA Division 1 operations?

Join us online for an in-depth, three-hour brainstorming and discussion session that will help elicit the best current thinking for core questions facing leaders and administrators in Division 1 athletics. VP of Intercollegiate Athletics, Ken Halpin of Winthrop University (also a member of the NCAA Division 1 Council) will jumpstart the conversation by offering an analysis of how current times could shape pieces like:

  • Coaches’ contracts
  • The cutting (or adding) of sports programs
  • The understanding of what success means for Black student athletes
  • Multimedia rights

You will then work with peers from other institutions in small groups to share and refine your thinking.

Is this session right for you?

Presidents, Chiefs of Staff, (Associate) Athletic Directors, Vice Presidents of Student Affairs, and other administrators who shape athletics at NCAA Division 1 institutions will benefit from this session.

There are no easy answers or experts in our current operating environment, so we will ask you to take an active role in shaping the agenda of our meeting and sharing your ideas and challenges for both short- and long-term planning.

Limited Attendance

In order to ensure a high-quality learning experience, we have intentionally designed this Virtual Training to have a limited number of total attendees. To ensure access from both paying participants and also from those who have an All-Inclusive membership, when the membership cap is reached, only paying participants can register after that point (while spaces are still available). If you have questions about whether this program is right for you, please contact us.

The Academic Impressions Virtual Workshop Experience

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to exploring responsive issues in higher education. Our virtual workshops provide you with an active learning environment and an online space where you can explore ideas, get inspired by what your peers are doing, and understand the range of possibilities around a certain topic. Depending on what you need to solve a specific challenge at your institution, you will have the chance to gain ideas, plans, refinements, or connections with those undergoing the same challenges as you. You will leave these sessions with practical solutions that you can take back to your team or task force.

What you will get:

  • Learn from what your peers are doing across the nation
  • Gather unique and creative approaches that you may not have thought about
  • Validate and vet plans and priorities
  • Contribute your ideas and help shape the conversation
  • Get work done in a space that’s designed to help you reflect, be creative, and maintain focus on the issue
  • Connect with subject matter experts who steer the conversation and add value
  • Experience expert facilitation to ensure practical outcomes and takeaways

As the coronavirus pandemic unfolds nationally, it is so important to keep connecting and networking with your peers - at a “social distance” - and to keep learning and developing as higher-ed leaders and professionals. Don’t let social distancing and quarantines prevent you from setting aside time for professional development. Everything is changing so fast; more than ever, we need to be pooling our resources and knowledge and finding the best ways to develop our capacity, connect and share with each other, and move forward during a challenging time.

AGENDA

July 30, 2020

12:00 - 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time

After hearing from our facilitator, you will work in small groups with peers from other institutions to share your current thinking around timely questions in Division 1 athletics, such as:

  • While you’ve historically adjusted coaching contracts for great seasons, should you also adjust them consistently for poor seasons?
  • How can you manage the cutting of sports to ensure optimal outcomes for staff and students?
  • What sports might you strategically add to your roster based on their potential to out-earn their operating expenses?
  • How can you give Black student athletes a voice for change in today’s climate?
  • Can you bring multimedia rights in-house to save money but also regain control over your name, image, and likeness?
