Spend It on Purpose

Read Time:

A new term hands you a surplus of energy exactly once. Aiming it is the whole job.

Picture the same team from Monday, six weeks on.

In one version, the energy has quietly scattered into a spread of half-owned projects, and nobody can say what the term was about. In another, the team spent October pushing hard on one thing that mattered and knew exactly why.

The difference was not how much energy they began the term with. Instead, it was whether anyone decided where that energy was pointed.

Notice that the answer is not to do less. Protecting your energy so that you don’t burn out is a real practice, but it’s a different one. This is the opposite situation. You have a surplus, and the leadership work is to direct it well. In the first weeks of the term, your job is to be the person who spends the collective energy on purpose rather than letting it drain by default.

Name what the term is for. Choose one or two things this term’s energy exists to move and say it out loud to your team. Ambiguity is what lets the surplus scatter.

Protect the team’s capacity for it. Decline or defer at least one thing you would otherwise have absorbed, specifically so that the priority has room. A protected priority needs a visible tradeoff, or it’s only a wish.

Set expectations while goodwill is high. The window when everyone is fresh is the easiest time to agree on how you’ll work once things get hard. Use it before the pressure arrives, not after.

This situation is the Sage in practice at team-level. It’s choosing the path the moment needs. Sometimes, it’s the Visionary, who names what matters. Sometimes it’s the Warrior, who drives the one thing that counts and lets the rest wait. What it isn’t is the Visionary shadow running the room because the room happens to feel good.

The energy of a new term is one of the few gifts the calendar gives you. Spend it like you meant to.
