The average student affairs professional may not assess risk when doing key job functions like running a student activity event, having a student conduct meeting, working in campus recreation, or running an athletic event. Even high profile events or protests may not get the rightful attention from frontline student affairs staff. While you don’t need to expect everyone to become a risk manager, there are simple things all of these professionals can do to account for risk.

Bev remains a licensed attorney in Michigan where she practiced law as a defense attorney for several years before embarking on a career in higher education. Since 2005, she has held various positions in higher education, including executive management, academics (as a faculty), labor relations, and student affairs. Bev has been involved in compliance areas including, but not limited to: Title IX, FERPA, ADA/Section 504, Clery Act, VAWA/Campus SaVE Act, and the DFSCA. She has implemented student sexual misconduct processes (and all ancillary procedures); trained Title IX investigators, hearing panel chairs and board members, students, faculty, and staff; developed programming; and conducted continuous process improvements. She has also assisted many institutions in developing processes to meet compliance issues, implement Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs), train student conduct boards and Chairs, and review and implement Title IX and ADA/504 Grievance procedures.
