Leadership Insights
Most leadership teams are busy.
Calendars fill quickly—with standing meetings, project updates, and urgent decisions that can’t wait. The work feels productive, and the agenda gets through its bullet points.
And yet—important agenda items have the nasty habit of getting postponed. Items like:
- The strategic question that deserves deeper thought.
- The tension between two units that no one has quite addressed.
- The workflow challenge that everyone knows exists but they haven’t had time to unpack.
These conversations require more than ten minutes at the end of a meeting. They require time, reflection, and space to think together.
But that space rarely appears in the normal rhythm of the week.
Why Retreats Matter
This is where retreats can be powerful for leadership teams.
A retreat isn’t simply time away from the office. It’s time intentionally set aside for the work that doesn’t fit into ordinary meetings.
When teams step away from daily pressures—even briefly—they create conditions where deeper conversations can happen:
- Strategic questions receive sustained attention.
- Lingering challenges can finally be surfaced.
- Team members have the time to listen, reflect, and problem-solve together.
Many teams discover that issues lingering for months begin to move forward once they finally have the time to explore them fully.
The Work Beneath the Work
Often, the most valuable retreat conversations are not about the immediate project or initiative, they’re about the dynamics beneath the work. Such as:
- How decisions are made.
- Where communication breaks down.
- How priorities are actually aligned.
These conversations are difficult to rush and easy to avoid.
But when leadership teams create intentional space for them, something shifts. Teams return with greater clarity, stronger relationships, and a renewed sense of shared direction.
Pause & Reflect
Think about your last few leadership meetings. Which of these conversations keeps getting postponed?
- A strategic question that deserves deeper discussion
- A workflow challenge everyone feels but hasn’t unpacked
- A tension between teams that remains unresolved
- A decision that requires broader alignment
Write down the one issue your team would benefit most from exploring with uninterrupted time.
That may be the conversation that deserves retreat space.
