Leadership Insights
Many leaders leave retreats with mixed feelings. They’ll find the conversation enjoyable and the change in the environment refreshing. But once everyone returns to campus, they believe one thing will be clear: Not much will actually change.
This usually happens for a simple reason—that the retreat was designed around a generic agenda rather than around the team’s real needs.
Retreats work best when they focus on the kinds of conversations that cannot happen anywhere else. These often include topics like:
- Strategic visioning and long-term planning.
- Complex challenges that require multiple perspectives.
- Clarifying values, culture, and shared priorities.
- Strengthening relationships and repairing trust.
- Defining how a leadership team works together.
These topics benefit from extended dialogue, reflection, and collective thinking. The retreat format creates the psychological space for those conversations to unfold.
What Retreats Aren’t Designed For
At the same time, some types of work are better handled in regular meetings. For example:
- Highly technical analysis that requires extensive data review
- Routine operational decisions
- Individual performance conversations
- Detailed process discussions
When retreats focus too heavily on these operational topics, they can feel like an inefficient use of time.
Designing Retreats That Work
The most effective retreats begin with a simple question: What conversation does our team need to have most right now?
The answer will look different for every leadership team. Some need strategic clarity. Others need to rebuild trust, resolve lingering challenges, or align around priorities. And when retreat agendas are designed around those real needs, the experience becomes far more than a break from the office.
It becomes a turning point for the team.
Pause & Reflect
If your team stepped away for a one-day retreat, consider these questions:
- What issue would you want resolved before the day ended?
- What conversation have you been avoiding because there’s never enough time?
- What clarity would help your team to work better together afterward?
Write down one question your team needs to answer together.
After all, strong retreats often begin with a single powerful question.
