Leveraging Cultural Wealth and Community: A Discussion for Latinx Leaders in Higher Education

Last updated December 5, 2022

Explore your Latinx cultural wealth with a community of peers.

Overview

Latina, Latino, and Latinx (Latinx/a/o) leaders have unique knowledge, skills, strengths, and experiences to contribute to higher education, but the academy was built with systemic inequities that can undermine advancement and success. Furthermore, as a changing societal landscape puts diversity front and center, many Latinx/a/o leaders find themselves navigating challenges that peers—who do not share their Latinx/a/o identity—do not understand. In this virtual discussion, we will explore the challenges of being a Latinx/a/o leader in higher ed and how your identity impacts how you see and represent yourself. We will draw upon research in community cultural wealth as a framework for you to leverage your strengths and values in leadership positions as you navigate the intersections of the distinct worlds you occupy.

This program is the first in a two-part series. While this first program is created intentionally for leaders who identify as Latinx/a/o, the second session is intended for any leader interested in creating systemic change at their institution to better support Latinx/a/o leaders.

Who should attend?

All Latina, Latino, and Latinx leaders interested in taking an asset-based approach to uncovering community cultural wealth and building community with other Latinx/a/o leaders should attend. Those serving in mid-senior-level leadership roles may especially benefit from the discussion.

While this first program is created intentionally for leaders who identify as Latinx/a/o, any leader interested in creating systemic change at their institution to better support Latinx/a/o leaders is invited to join us for the second session Support and Retain Latinx Leaders in Higher Education: A Training for All Leaders.

Agenda

January 31, 2023

2:00 – 3:30 pm ET

In this discussion, we’ll first get acquainted with the concept of community cultural wealth and explore what that means for the group. We will explore how Dr. Tara J. Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth model posits that individuals from marginalized backgrounds possess unique knowledge, skills, strengths and experiences—and discuss how this might apply to your experience as a leader in higher education.

Next, we’ll collectively explore issues such as:

  • What factors make some Latinx/a/o leaders more successful?
  • How do you navigate ecosystems that are not inclusive or equitable?
  • How do you advocate for yourself and others?
  • Finally, we’ll discuss what you think institutions can do to better support and retain Latinx/a/o leaders. This part of the discussion will help inform a training designed specifically for leaders looking to create more inclusive and equitable campuses for Latinx/a/o faculty and staff.

Throughout the discussion, we’ll place special emphasis on navigating this journey in community with your Latinx/a/o peers.
