Provost Summit: Leading for Innovation and Growth

Leading Into the Future: A Strategy Summit for Provosts

September 15-16, 2025 | Denver, CO

Expand your leadership and innovative thinking skills alongside other Provosts and Chief Academic Officers.

What You'll Gain

  • A clearer understanding of your leadership style and its impact on your institution’s future using the Five Paths to Leadership®.
  • A focused examination of existing areas of strength and distinction within your institution.
  • Specific strategies for encouraging creative ideas and building a culture of learning across the academic enterprise.
  • Tools for onboarding and supporting your team, including your new Deans, more effectively.

Overview

Given the significant headwinds facing higher education, sticking with “the way things have always been done” is no longer a viable option. Many institutions struggle to break from tradition and think and plan longer-term, stymied by a lack of trust and collaboration across divisions, leaders who are constantly caught in firefighting mode, and a prevalent zero-sum mindset.

This workshop is designed specifically for Provosts and Chief Academic Officers who want to think strategically about the future of their institutions, mobilize their senior team more effectively toward that vision, and engender the kind of trust, creative thinking, and collaborative problem-solving within the culture that is needed to support it.

Session Descriptions

More details about the timing of the days can be found by clicking Learn More and Register, but session descriptions of the two days are below:

Tomorrow’s University
Higher education is facing a future of disruption and reinvention. We’ll explore plausible scenarios for the future of colleges and universities—both challenges and emerging opportunities—and consider what strategic shifts will be needed to stay ahead of the curve.

The Five Paths to Leadership®
The Five Paths to Leadership® is a powerful tool for deepening self-awareness. We’ll use this tool specifically to examine how your natural leadership tendencies shape how you think about innovation and the future, how you prioritize your time, and how you approach strategy versus operations.

Identifying and Investing in Cathedrals of Excellence
Too many institutions stretch themselves thin trying to be everything to everyone. Using an innovative method, we’ll help you identify areas of distinct strength and investigate what it would mean to make bold, focused investments in those areas to drive institutional distinction.

Building a Culture that Supports Learning and Experimentation
To innovate, leaders must first create the conditions where innovation is possible—where people feel safe to contribute new ideas and challenge long-standing assumptions. In this session, we’ll delve into proven methods to encourage new ideas and a culture of experimentation.

Building a High-Performing Team
Leading from the Provost’s seat means aligning a complex and often fragmented group of academic leaders—Deans, Vice Provosts, and others. Often teams compete for resources rather than operate with a shared institutional purpose. In this session, we’ll share a practical assessment tool and targeted strategies for you to improve alignment, collaboration, and trust among your team.

Recruiting and Onboarding Deans
Strong academic leadership starts with selecting the right Deans—and setting them up for success. We’ll examine strategies for recruiting mission-aligned candidates, designing effective onboarding, and accelerating trust and impact from day one.

Leading Change through Collaboration
Implementing change in higher ed requires buy-in across deeply independent and decentralized structures. In this session, we’ll explore collaborative approaches to change that engage stakeholders and encourage ownerships of outcomes, not just buy-in.

Action Planning
At the end of the workshop, we’ll provide time to reflect on what you’ve learned and how you can implement it on your campus.
