Overview

Are your residence halls as green as they could be?

Sustainability initiatives continue to be a priority at almost all higher education institutions, yet one area of campus that is commonly overlooked is housing and residence life. Engaging students in the residence halls is a crucial component to a campus-wide sustainability strategy.

Join us for a webcast that will outline the sustainability initiatives under way at the University of British Columbia and share tips for implementing these programs at your institution. This session will highlight a variety of programmatic ideas and infrastructure improvements as well as an overview of UBC's signature "Green Stars Unit" initiative.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The audience for this webcast includes directors, assistant directors, and associate directors of housing and residence life, as well as any professionals from housing and residence life offices interested in incorporating more sustainability initiatives into their operations. Campus sustainability officers are also encouraged to attend, as they may look to collaborate with their housing and residence life operations on some of these initiatives. This program is ideal for institutions with little or no dedicated budget dollars for sustainability initiatives, as it will highlight low-cost initiatives and options for deeper investments.

Residence Life Managers

University of British Columbia

Instructor

Cate Morrison and Johanna Webber are residence life managers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. At UBC, residence life managers are responsible for programs, activities, conduct, and residence life in residence halls. Cate works in a traditional-style residence while Johanna works in a suite-style residence. Individually, Cate and Johanna have worked to move several sustainability initiatives forward, including organic waste collection in the residence halls, sourcing local goods and products when possible, and UBC's signature "Green Star Units" and "Do It In the Dark" programming.

Cate and Johanna are emerging experts on sustainability in housing and residence life operations. Both are passionate about small steps that make a big difference and making participation in sustainable initiatives as simple as possible.
