Future Trends in Higher Education: A Discussion Series

Future Trends in Higher Education

A DISCUSSION SERIES

Overview

New technologies in higher education continue to race forward, and—from teaching, to equity and inclusion, to the student experience—they are having a profound impact on all corners of campus life. However, despite their significance, there are few discussions spaces designed for enabling leaders to connect with one another, learn from others, and share ideas around how to best prepare and respond.

Join us for a free discussion-based series for discovering the technologies and trends impacting higher education across the country. You will learn about the basics of each technology and trend in order to fully understand its potential, as well as how to implement and evaluate each on your campus. In conversation with our panelists and your peers, you will explore questions like:

  • What committees or other initiatives are others proactively putting in place to better understand and prepare their institutions for technological advances?
  • What impact does new technology have on aspects like teaching and learning, equity and inclusion, cost, and learning outcomes?
  • What strategies are institutions employing to evaluate impact? How are faculty and students being supported in that evaluation?

The webcasts in this series will be available on a rolling basis throughout the year. Exact session titles and dates will continue to be added. Please check back frequently for updates!

SESSION 3

Navigating the New Reality of Mergers, Acquisitions, and Closures in Higher Education

Recorded on November 29, 2023

Overcome the chaos of today’s higher education landscape with a better understanding of the forces driving industry mergers, acquisitions, and closures.

Less Information About This Session

More Information About This Session

Overview
Mergers, acquisitions, and closures are a reality for a large number of colleges and universities as the landscape of higher education continues to change. Colleges are seeking to be more competitive than ever. However, successful mergers/acquisitions cannot be only about survival or fixing bad economics; the resulting institution must be stronger as a result. Otherwise, when mergers and acquisitions fail to provide the perceived financial reward, closure is often the only option.

Unfortunately, the benefits of scale and competitiveness do not come easily or without risk. Key facts and information must be understood when evaluating, negotiating, and implementing a strategic merger. Further, it’s already too late to prepare once a merger or alliance is actively being pursued. Leaders need to be proactive and understand the landscape so that they can be either opportunistic or strategically positioned to create the best possible outcome for their institution. In this session, we will explore the following topics:

  • Identifying key areas for partnership
  • Creating a strategy for early conversations
  • Navigating deal features and understanding what it takes to be successful
  • Asking the right questions and identifying potential risks and threats
  • Understanding the realities of closures

Who Should Attend
This training is designed for any higher education leaders, faculty, and staff who are interested in anticipating and meeting the challenges facing higher education given the impact of mergers, acquisitions, and closures.
