Integrating Inclusivity into Your Leadership Philosophy

Last updated October 6, 2020

Discover how your values can either help or hinder your ability to serve as an inclusive leader.

Overview

An essential behavior practiced by inclusive leaders is seeking perspectives and feedback from people who have different ideas, experiences, and backgrounds. Being receptive and open to different views also requires inclusive leaders to challenge the way they see and interpret the world. To do so, they must examine the values and experiences they bring into their leadership work and understand how those values show up in the way they lead. More importantly, inclusive leaders reflect on how their values help and hinder their ability to listen and respond to the perspectives of others.

Join us online for a two-part interactive workshop that will help you reflect on and explore how your personal values shape your leadership identity and how well that identity aligns with the inclusive-leader mindset. The leaders of today and tomorrow understand that inclusivity is not something you do when it’s convenient: inclusivity is a daily practice and mindset infused into your leadership identity.

After this training, you’ll be able to align your values and leadership identity towards that of an inclusive leader by:

  1. Identifying your primary values and evaluating how well they express inclusivity
  2. Writing a leadership philosophy that articulates an inclusive leadership identity
  3. Brainstorming ways to utilize your values and practice your leadership identity daily

Who should attend?

This two-part training is designed for all academic and staff leaders who are interested in exploring how well they are expressing themselves as inclusive leaders. Whether or not you formally supervise teams, you will walk away with ideas for communicating and expressing your values in an inclusive way.

Agenda

Pre-Work
Prior to the first session, you will be asked to complete an assignment to help identify your values and how those values have been shaped by your personal and professional experiences. Completing this assignment prior to the first session will prepare you for the group discussions and allow you to have more robust conversations with your peers.

  • Identify How Your Values Shape Your Leadership Identity

  • Assignment Between Sessions: Write Your Leadership Philosophy
Building upon the discussions you had during the first session, you will put your leadership identity into words by writing a short narrative that communicates to others the type of leader you are based on your values.
