There are many differences between military culture and civilian culture, and these differences can have a major effect on how veterans interact with your institution. It is imperative that academic support services be aware of how they can help veteran students make the best choices on their academic plans so they can effectively respond to and retain these students.
This archived webcast will show how the strengths-based advising model can be applied to veteran students and what advisors can do to best help these students. There will be more of an emphasis on what advisors can do in their advising sessions rather than background on the needs of veterans.
Administrators in academic advising and coordinators of faculty advising will benefit from learning more about how to work best with veteran students.
Prior to assuming his current position, Jose served as chair and associate professor of social work at Saint Leo University. He most recently co-authored two books: A Civilian Counselor's Primer for Counseling Veterans and A Developmental Guide to Research: A Student Faculty Handbook. He served as a Reconnaissance Marine at Camp Pendleton, Ca. where he was honorably discharged.
