Overview

Recent events have brought increased attention to how your campus identifies and responds to threatening behaviors.

This program focuses specifically on when and how to conduct an individualized threat assessment and the pitfalls to avoid in making certain it is done correctly and legally. Questions that are relevant across campus -- such as, "How can you determine if a student is exhibiting threatening (vs. nuisance) behavior?" -- will be addressed as well as the steps to take to respond to a student threat. Proactive prevention strategies will also be discussed.

Participants will leave with key elements to consider in policy and procedure development as they review their threat assessment protocol.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This is an event geared toward a cross-campus audience, including directors of disabilities services, counseling and health center staff, security directors and administrators, residence life staff, academic advisors and administrators, campus legal counsel, and student life personnel.

Instructors

Anne Lundquist

Doctoral Associate and Ph.D. Candidate

Western Michigan University

Anne has served as the dean of students at four liberal arts colleges. She has earned a national reputation in her field, presenting at workshops and conferences across the country. She has written, presented, and provided training on responding to issues concerning students with significant psychological disabilities. She is the co-author of The Student Affairs Handbook: Translating Legal Principles into Effective Policies (LRP 2007). Anne earned her B.A. from Albion College and her M.F.A. from Western Michigan University. She is a doctoral candidate in the higher education administration program at Western Michigan University and works with WMU’s student affairs division, where she is coordinating a comprehensive assessment and strategic-planning initiative.

Allan Shackelford

Attorney

As an attorney and/or consultant, Allan has advised institutions of higher education for more than 30 years on various issues, including student affairs, disability accommodations, study abroad, governance, accreditation, and risk management. Additionally, he writes for a number of publications related to higher education policy and legal issues, including a bimonthly column that appears in Disability Compliance for Higher Education. Allan has presented extensively at national higher education conferences on risk and legal liability issues related to students with significant psychological disabilities. He received his B.A. in history from Emory University and his J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law.
