Managing Difficult Faculty and Staff – A Bootcamp for Leaders

Online | March 11, 2025 1:00 pm ET - April 1, 2025 3:30 pm ET

Grow your skillset in managing the difficult people who can make leadership so hard.

Overview

As a supervisor or leader, responding to difficult faculty or staff is some of the most stressful but rewarding work you can do—if you can do it right. Addressing difficult behavior in those who work for you can transform your team from closed off and avoidant to effective and collaborative. But how do you do this work?

Join us for a four-week, online bootcamp to learn how to effectively manage difficult behaviors on your team while still leading with empathy. This unique experience will allow you to:

  • Learn a 4-step process for identifying and addressing difficult behavior, which takes you from empathetic to authoritative.
  • Practice using the framework via role-plays built around common scenarios you face with your faculty and staff.
  • Apply the framework to your own difficult person by creating an intervention plan that you can use after you complete the program.
  • Create a community of peers who can support you in your progress.

Don’t miss out on the special opportunity to participate in a small-group feedback session, which is included in this program. You’ll meet with your instructor and a small group of other participants, so that you can workshop potential solutions you can use to manage your difficult colleague. These sessions are not recorded, which gives you time and space for talking confidentially and candidly about the situations that trouble you the most.

It can take years to perfect the art of managing difficult faculty or staff when you’re doing it on your own. Participate in this bootcamp, and jump-start the process to give yourself a leg up on the most taxing part of your job.

Who should attend?

This bootcamp is applicable to anyone who manages others and who is looking for more productive strategies for communicating with your most challenging team members. Past participants who have benefited include:

  • Department chairs dealing with a faculty bully in their department or new faculty who seem not to fit in with their departments.
  • Directors or AVPs with staff who are barriers to innovation and change.
  • Deans dealing with disruptive faculty or department chairs who do not complete needed work.
  • HR staff who are looking to introduce more intervention techniques across the university.
