The Five Paths to Leadership℠ Self-Assessment and Applying It to Supervision and Communication Workshop for Truckee Meadows Community College

Self-awareness is at the heart of effective leadership and this assessment’s dynamic view of leadership helps leaders deepen their self-awareness of where they are in any given moment, how stress impacts their ability to lead, and how they can lead from each of the Five Paths depending on the situation or context. The intuitive and practical design of this model helps leaders maximize their own personal effectiveness and adapt to and gain influence with others. Uniquely, the tool also provides valuable insights into how your leadership changes under stress. This workshop will use the lens of the Five Paths to Leadership℠ to dive deeper into building good communication and trust between supervisors and supervisees. We will start with a debrief of your scores and time to talk as a team about what that means for you. Then we will discuss how you can apply your knowledge in the context of your supervisory relationships by developing common language and learning to understand the motivations of others. Pedagogical Values: Understanding Your Teaching Practice

Due to limited pedagogical training and a lack of institutional focus on teaching as an iterative skill, faculty often replicate the teaching they experienced as students—which may not be the most effective approach. Empowering students to learn, demonstrate agency in the classroom, and legislate their own learning experiences requires reflection and the intentional development of values around teaching and learning. Relationships of Reciprocity: In Pursuit of Shared Teaching and Learning, a new publication from Academic Impressions and authored by Monica B. Glina, offers faculty ways to understand their teaching practice and values, to reflect on how they can incorporate new strategies into in-person, hybrid, or asynchronous teaching, and to evolve that practice.  Join us for a webinar that will walk you through an exercise to help you to reflect on the values that inform your teaching. Glina will help you to explore how your professional values manifest themselves in your interactions with your students or co-learners, in the learning experiences you create, and in the way you view assessment. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn more about the interactive nature of the book and how you can use it to plan your upcoming semester.

Managing Difficult Faculty and Staff

Join us for a workshop where you will learn how to intervene with and correct the most problematic performances and behaviors within your team. Within the workshop, you will be introduced to the “EM & EM” model, which includes four increasingly authoritative steps intended to engage, set expectations for behavioral change, communicate consequences for non-compliance, and minimize the ill effects of bad behaviors on others. We will also address the unique aspects of higher education culture that complicate employee oversight—including tenure, union contracts, and ill-defined leadership structures.    This workshop will provide multiple opportunities for you to both apply this model to your unique context and practice these difficult conversations with other leaders experiencing similar challenges. You’ll be encouraged to bring your most difficult personnel scenarios to the group for practice and valuable feedback. Throughout the workshop, you’ll also develop an intervention plan specifically tailored to the challenging people you’re managing, and it will also document how the EM & EM model can help you to customize your approach to your toughest situations. You’ll walk away from this workshop feeling more comfortable, confident, and ready to take on your most difficult conversations.     Optional Pre-Conference Workshop: Practical Conflict Resolution for Leaders  […]
