Distributed Leadership: Building Trust and Community

Distributed leadership allows for the suggestions and concerns of all stakeholders to be heard and counted in a way that is not purely representative, but fully inclusive. Instead of decisions coming from the top with minimal transparency, they will be based on what the stakeholders have to bring to the table throughout the process before decisions are made. Many organizations have a vertical approval process, whereby the senior positions maintain the most vital information and decision-making power, which limits trust and engagement due to lack of transparency in the process. In today’s complex and ever-changing world, there’s often a need to share the decision-making responsibilities across the organization so that you can build trust and community while also inspiring the best thinking from the people who will be most impacted by the decisions. Distributed leadership is one such way to build this capacity in your leadership on change. Join us online to learn the skillsets and work through sample scenarios that you will need to start implementing distributed leadership in small and meaningful ways. You will walk away with tips and strategies for how to: Know when and how to effectively practice distributed leadership based on your leadership experience, role, […]

Title IX Evidence Collection: Strategies to Ensure a Complete Investigation

Identifying and collecting relevant evidence is a critical step within the Title IX grievance process. It enables Title IX Investigators to develop a case timeline and provide the decision-maker with an understanding, to the best of their ability, about what may have occurred during the alleged incident(s). But how do we go about doing this step effectively to ensure vital information isn’t overlooked? Join us for an in-depth virtual training that will give you tools to complete the evidence gathering phase an investigation and give you the opportunity to practice using them with your peers. We will embark on an investigation through the lens of mock scenarios designed to teach you: Strategies to collect both testimonial and non-testimonial evidence. How to identify what evidence might be missing. Steps you can take to help fill in the gaps.

Fundraising for Department Chairs

At its core, fundraising is storytelling. How effectively you tell your story, who you choose to tell your story to, and how you demonstrate the impact of fundraising dollars once raised will ultimately determine your success as a fundraiser. The good news is you are already doing much of this work by advocating internally at the Dean and Provost level for your students, faculty, and programs. This video course is designed to help you broaden those skills and refine your message externally to alumni, donors, and community members. You will learn how to approach fundraising for your department in a strategic and meaningful way by learning how to: Explore your institution’s fundraising operations and structure, so that you can better understand your role and ways to partner with others. Identify and articulate the most emergent needs for your department in a way that aligns with donors’ interests. Plan for and navigate through the five stages of the solicitation cycle to cultivate long-lasting relationships with donors. The principles of fundraising shared in this course can be implemented by any department chair who is interested in growing their expertise in cultivating relationships with donors.  Whether you are solely responsible for fundraising or […]

Assessing Credibility in Title IX Cases

It’s not uncommon for someone to have imperfect or inconsistent recall and just because something doesn’t make sense to you doesn’t necessarily mean it is untrue. How can Title IX decision makers effectively and fairly assess credibility throughout the course of a case? Join us for a deep-dive virtual training that will help make the practice of assessing credibility—often a nebulous concept—more concrete and tangible. You will learn which factors you need to consider, how to assess the credibility of statements, documents, and other information gathered in a case, and how to communicate this in your decision rationale, all in a fair and impartial manner.

Building and Maintaining External Relationships as Chief of Staff

A Chief of Staff often serves as the convener between the university and the community at large. From working with local leaders to law enforcement to local employers, having strong relationships with those outside the institution can help to efficiently and collaboratively tackle challenges that arise. In this 60-minute webcast, you will learn how to identify these key partnerships, initiate conversations, and maintain open communication between all parties.

Navigate Challenging Conversations with Donors

Your donors’ views of current events may not always align with your personal or institutional values and mission, which can create tension when cultivating the relationship. How do you navigate through those conversations in a way that sustains or even builds the connection? Join us online to hear from our expert facilitator on how the University of Utah is approaching challenging conversations with prospects and donors. You will hear stories and examples of how the university has responded to some of the most challenging situations on their campus and walk away with guidance for how to facilitate dialogue that aligns your internal stakeholders, prospects, and donors around these often difficult-to-talk-about topics: Racial Justice and Student Activism Politics Leadership Transitions The Value of Higher Education

Change and Continuity Planning Post-COVID: A Process for Leading with Greater Intention

For the past year, the pandemic has caused academic leaders to have to pivot rapidly. Whether working on college-level strategic plans, the implementation of new academic programs, or the retooling of curriculum, the nature of the crisis necessitated quick, decisive action without much room for pause or deliberation. Fast forward to today, and though the need to engage in continuity planning and manage ongoing change hasn’t gone away, we are no longer in full-blown crisis mode. You can afford to slow down, ensure your change initiatives align with your division’s mission and vision, and plan more purposefully. Join us for an interactive training that will help you reset and approach the change you are leading with more intention. Our instructor, Joshua Beck, Associate Dean in the Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago, will share lessons learned from his own experience designing and implementing complex projects and provide a framework you can use to plan your own continuity and change efforts. You’ll be given time to apply the framework to an initiative you are working on during the program and will be guided through initial planning for your own project.

In anticipation, institutions are in the early stages of planning for what this might entail from a health and wellness perspective for faculty, staff, and students. To buoy this planning, many are seeking a space where they can come together with other leaders from institutions across the country, share ideas, and learn from others’ best current thinking.  Join us for an in-depth, two-hour brainstorming and discussion session with your peers to share strategies and provide space to benchmark and ask questions about re-entry testing and vaccinations. You will participate actively in large and small group discussions framed around questions such as these:   What progress and plans have others made in planning for re-entry testing and vaccinations?  What have been the lessons learned from previous stages of reopening?  What are the community considerations you want to take into account? What existing policies do we need to re-examine/revise in anticipation of reopening?   What will the impact be on staffing?  We understand that this type of planning is murky and generates […]
